Considering its looks and how difficult it is to apply and remove, why do so many professional golfers tape a known neurotoxin to the back of their clubs?

The Role of Lead Tape in Golf

Why Pros Use Lead Tape

Tour players and technicians understand that swing weight changes are most effective when mass is added to the clubhead. They also understand that weights added to the tip or hosel reduces functional MOI (moment of inertia) by compromising face stability—particularly on strikes that are low and/or toward the toe. They also have a team.

Tour pros are supported by fully equipped tour vans staffed with technicians.
When lead tape is applied—or removed—it is done with proper tools, solvents, heat, and cleaning agents to avoid damaging finishes or altering head geometry. And until now, there were no precise, external, rules-conforming alternatives for adding mass to iron and wedge heads.

Lead Tape Was Never the Real Problem

Professional golfers still use lead tape for one reason: it places mass where it actually works—on the clubhead itself. That insight is correct.

But everything else about lead tape is not.

  • Lead is a neurotoxin.
  • Tape is crude, non-calibrated, and prone to deformation.
  • Placement of lead tape is imprecise.

Lead tape survives not because it is good, but because no better universal alternative has existed for placing precise, external mass on irons and wedges after the club is built.

Even designs that allow removal and repositioning suffer adhesive degradation over time—often resulting in non-conforming clubs once final placement is reached. 

But the relevant Equipment Rules require that external mass be fixed prior to play, not adjustable during a round, and treated as part of the clubhead once attached.

This creates a fundamental conflict for aftermarket solutions: fitting requires adjustability; play requires permanence.

Most aftermarket products attempt to solve both with a single adhesive interface—and fail at both. By the time the golfer commits to a final placement, adhesion strength has already been compromised.
